GCISD Athletics is proud to recognize two head coaches who have surpassed a career milestone during this athletic season. Colleyville Heritage High School softball head coach Allison Conaway and Grapevine High School girls soccer head coach Steven McBride both achieved their 500th win.
“It's hard to believe I have played that many softball games, let alone won that many. I celebrated my 100th win as a head coach, but really missed the 200th, 300th and 400th wins, as they all seemed to sneak up on me,” said Conaway on her achievement. “I'm not ever focused on my record as a coach, just the wins for the team, each year trying to win a state championship.”
Since joining CHHS, Conaway has won four district championships and, in 2023, led the Panthers to the state tournament for the first time since 1998.
“I think the most memorable year was in 2023 when we went to the state tournament as a team. The excitement of the softball playoffs and playing for your school and community is second to none at the high school level,” said Conaway. “I have had some really special players over the years who have become decorated college athletes and coaches themselves, and lots of assistants who have gone on to be successful head coaches. To me, that is more special than the wins and losses.”

McBride started coaching in Amarillo, then stopped at Georgetown before joining GHS during the 2014-2015 school year. “Obviously, I feel a bit overwhelmed getting to 500 wins, to be honest. First, it shows that I have been doing this for a long time, so that is one part of the emotion. Secondly, I have been very blessed to be in such great environments with great players and great support,” said McBride. “Lastly, my family has been a huge part of this with their unwavering love and support, which I am so grateful for.”
McBride has also brought home hardware to GCISD, including seven state tournament appearances and a state championship in 2023, which is one of his favorite memories during his tenure at GHS.

“It was a great group of girls and parents, and to have my family on the field when it all ended – I just couldn't ask for a better finish than that. So much emotion, I honestly cannot put it into words,” said McBride on winning the state championship.
Congratulations to Coach Conaway and Coach McBride on their incredible accomplishments throughout their journey at GCISD, and their success on and off the field.
