Landyn Blueitt and coach

On the evening of January 23, this Colleyville Heritage High School sophomore played in the JV girls basketball game at 4:30 p.m., then played a varsity girls soccer game at 5:45 p.m., followed by cheering for the boys varsity basketball game at 7 p.m. Hear from her on why it was important to keep her commitment to all events that evening. She is a great example of dedication that GCISD students exemplify.

What activities are you involved in at school?
At CHHS, I am involved in Panther cheer, soccer, basketball, leadership, student council, Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). I am also hoping to run track after soccer season.

You had three activities in one evening. Tell us about why it was important to you to keep your commitments to all three?
I believe that it is important to keep my commitments because I gave each team my word. At the beginning of the year, I knew what I was signing myself up for and I spoke to each coach about my dedication to them and my teammates. I made the choice and commitment to do it all. It comes with a lot of responsibility and determination, but I enjoy each of these sports.

What was your takeaway from that evening?
I am just very grateful because I wouldn’t be able to do this everywhere. It is rare that coaches allow and even encourage a student to play multiple sports. I am so grateful for amazing teammates and coaches who work with me and are always pushing me to be better. I am grateful to my parents for driving me all over and helping me race between games and also for always showing up to watch and support me. I am grateful for our amazing trainers who always make sure I am hydrated and healthy. I’m grateful for all my teachers who are understanding, but hold me to a high standard. Most of all, I am thankful to God for blessing me to be able to compete.

Have you always been very involved in activities?
Yes, growing up I would watch my brother do it all. I kinda followed in his footsteps by trying everything. In addition to the sports I play now, when I was younger, I used to dance, do gymnastics, play volleyball, play softball, and do competitive cheer. I still currently play club soccer for Sting, outside of school. Last year as a freshman, I actually played volleyball at CHHS as well, and it was a great experience.

What would you tell fellow students, particularly those who are not yet in high school, about getting involved in school activities?

I would definitely encourage them to go for it! CHHS has many fun opportunities. You get the chance to create so many great bonds and memories with other students and teachers. Clubs or sports are a great way to expand your friend group and let go of some of the stress about school and homework. Don’t be nervous or scared. I know it can definitely feel intimidating, especially if you’re possibly with students in higher grade levels, but some of my favorite memories and friendships are with them, whom I’ve met through my activities.

What has your experience been in GCISD extracurricular activities?
It has been amazing. There are so many talented athletes and gifted coaches. I cannot thank my coaches enough. They really are the true heroes behind it all.

How has your involvement positively impacted your time in GCISD?
My favorite parts about high school are definitely game days. Whether it's cheering for Friday Night Lights, or preparing for the next basketball or soccer games, it's the best part of my week. I always have two days a week that I look forward to because I get to do what I love with some of my favorite people.

How do you think being involved in multiple activities will help you in your future?
It is definitely a juggling act, and I’ve had to learn to prepare ahead. Taking on many responsibilities means that I have had to learn time management and I know that will help me in the future. I also feel like I’ve learned good organizational skills by having to keep up with packing multiple bags with uniforms and equipment needed for each sport that day.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?
I’d love to give a shout-out to Coach Courtney Lee (Lady Panther basketball), Coach Monte Pace (Lady Panther soccer), Coach Josh McKinney (volleyball), and coaches Malloree Gray and Melissa Avila (from Panther Cheer) for working with me for the last year and a half to be able to be a multi-sport athlete. I am thankful for each of you!
